Meaningful Minimalism

Background

As I delve deeper into what is the largest project i have ever completed, I am exploring symbolism and the use of those symbols in the art I see around me. With this study collection, I had a number of things I was studying.

  • Linoleum Carving is a art form I have been skirting around for years. I have finally embraced it and I’m using these small carvings to improve in control of my tools and build to what I hope will be larger carved pieces more in line with my layered, quilted art.

  • The symbols that I choose for these pieces are not directly significant to me but I love the impact that have when displayed in a well orchestrated composition.

  • Composition in itself is a big part of this study which is why I have named this collection Meaningful Minimalism. I don’t typically lean towards art with a lot of white space but I recognize the need to have places to rest from constant stimulus as we navigate our busy lives. But I recognize the need within myself to understand that the minimalist aesthetic only works for me if it is meaningful and packed with symbolism and emotion.

Uptober 2020

Background

October has become a popular month of art challenges. I have found these challenges to be really helpful in helping me to experiment a little more with my art and challenge myself in my use of the tools and materials at my disposal. As a lover of all most art materials and mediums, I want to make sure I am using what I have and not falling into a habit of hoarding beautiful supplies.

100Days of UM Notebooks

Background

Taking part of in the 100 days project just as life under the pandemic in 2020 was what helped me in understanding how valuable small studies could be in increasing creativity. 100 days allowed me plenty of room and time to try everything from collage and paint to stamping and heat embossing.
